Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal might be reuniting for a Super Bowl LIX commercial paying tribute to When Harry Met Sally.
On Wednesday, Ryan and Crystal posted a photo showing the two seated on a couch, ala the “couples interviews” segment from their classic 1989 film that is widely credited with inventing the modern rom-com.
“It’s finally happening, we’re reuniting for something iconic. Can’t wait to show you all soon,” Ryan posted.
Given Super Bowl LIX is just around the corner, and companies are teasing their Super Bowl commercials, it’s reasonable to assume Ryan and Crystal will appear in a When Harry Met Sally-themed spot.
Ryan could promote a sequel, a series adaptation or another venture.
But the smart money is on a Super Bowl commercial.
When Harry Met Sally won a handful of awards and was nominated for many others, it is best remembered, of course, for the restaurant scene, where Ryan shows Crystal how women can, um, fake intimacy while making love. Ryan told Interview magazine in 2023 that her children are embarrassed by the scene. Ryan’s son told her that he had gone to Katz’s Deli, the New York City deli where the scene was shot, and there was an arrow pointing to the table where she had filmed the scene.
If Ryan had any plans to recreate that scene in the Super Bowl, she’d have better make it quick. The spot will be either 30 or 60 seconds at most, and leaving time for branding, there’s not much room left for fakery.
Fox is reportedly charging $7 million per 30-second spot in the game, and has been sold out of inventory since last fall.
