Tom Brady now has an ownership stake in a professional cricket league.
Because, why not?
Front Office Sports reported Saturday that Brady has an ownership stake in the Birmingham Phoenix, a team in The Hundred, a four-year-old league created by the England and Wales Cricket Board.
Brady’s exact stake is unclear. He’s an investor in Knighthead Capital Management, which bid £40 million (roughly $50.4 million) for the Phoenix.
Brady earned untold millions in his playing career from salary and endorsements, and is now raking in “retirement” income through a 10-year, $375 million deal to work as Fox Sports’ No. 1 game analyst. So he’s got plenty of disposable income to invest. In the past few years he’s been adding ownership stakes in pro sports teams to his portfolio. His most visible minority ownership stake is with the Las Vegas Raiders, which has led to scrutiny about how he can balance that role with his Fox Sports duties.
The legendary quarterback also has a small stake (approximately 3.3%) in Birmingham City F.C. and a Major League Pickleball team (both through Knighthead Capital Management). And he is a minority owner of the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces. Raiders owner Mark Davis is the Aces’ majority owner.
There’s plenty of smart money flooding into The Hundred. According to Front Office Sports, those making considerable investments include CEOs Sundar Pichai (Google), Satya Nadella (Microsoft), and Shantanu Narayen (Adobe).
