All eyes will be on Tom Brady as he prepares for the biggest assignment of his brief broadcasting career at Fox on Sunday for Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. And ahead of the game, Brady reflected on what has admittedly been a rollercoaster debut season for him in the broadcast booth.
Whether it be complaints about his on-air ability or questions about the potential conflict of interest due to his part-owner role with the Las Vegas Raiders, Brady has had his fair share of critics throughout the 2024-25 season.
While he has had some bright spots, the overwhelming majority of sports media members have questioned whether a Super Bowl assignment is too much too soon for Brady in his rookie season.
During a conference call on Wednesday where Brady spoke with reporters, he acknowledged his challenges throughout his debut season, outlining how he has made “plenty of mistakes” and “learned from all of them.”
“I think the mistakes that I’ve made, and I’ve made plenty, I’ve learned from all of them,” said Brady via Jimmy Traina of Sports Illustrated. “You’re not happy, they happen, but at the same time, you understand that when they do happen—and I mispronounce words or I forget a certain statistic or the preparation’s a little off in terms of my thoughts on something and I screw up the analysis—I go back and I want to get it right the next time. And without the mistakes, you don’t learn from them and apply them going forward. And I think all the mistakes I made, although I wish I didn’t make them, the fact that I can learn from them and move forward with a greater sense of awareness just allows you to improve.”
Brady went on to admit that he has heard all of the outside noise from his critics, saying that he is trying to “do things the right way” just as he did as a player.
“Naturally, you hear different things on social media and such,” said Brady. “And I have friends that will kind of give me little briefings about how it was. Again, all I’m trying to do is deliver for the fans. They’re the ones we’re trying to serve and I’m trying to elevate the game the best way I can. I tried to do that as a player by doing things the right way. I was just using my body to do that. Now I’ve gotta use and articulate through my words to do it.”
One could argue that Fox certainly hasn’t done Brady any favors by putting him on the network’s lead broadcast team in his debut season, which has only amplified the attention he has gotten throughout the season.
Now, Brady will be under the largest microscope in all of professional sports, though he of course has plenty of experience in past Super Bowls as a player.
Luckily, the NFL has at least rolled back the restrictions placed on Brady due to his Raiders ownership stake for Sunday’s game which should certainly help his preparation process leading up to the big game. He will now be permitted to attend pre-production meetings with both teams in the lead-up to the game, an element that has been lacking throughout the season.
