Urban Meyer is returning to Ohio State — well, sort of.
Meyer is not returning to coaching. Anytime there’s an opening, and his name is floated, he’s more than happy to turn it down and embrace his Fox Sports gig. It’s at Fox, where Meyer has often gone to bat for the Buckeyes, but he’s not so much an unabashed supporter. But he’s still very intertwined with the program, as he is very much one of head coach Ryan Day’s mentors.
That’s not to say that Meyer has his hands in the program, but he doesn’t have his hands off it either.
This week, news surfaced that the former Ohio State head coach will join play-by-play voice Jason Benetti and Brady Quinn on the call for Ohio State’s spring game on Saturday at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. That’s a change from regular Big Noon Kickoff games featuring the Buckeyes, where the familiar trio of Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt, and Jenny Taft call the action for FOX.
However, Klatt and Taft will be on the sidelines for this spring exhibition, and Johnson will be notably absent.
Buckeyes fans accustomed to Johnson’s voice in the booth will find a worthy replacement in Benetti. The broadcast also offers a unique opportunity to hear Meyer’s insights on the quarterback battle, considering his past outspokenness on the position.
