Brandon Marshall walked off a radio interview after hosts asked him about race

New York Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall appeared on Kirk & Callahan on Boston’s WEEI on Thursday morning, and the interview probably did not go how either he or the show’s hosts planned it.

After some inoffensive football-related conversation, Kirk Minihane and Gerry Callahan asked Marshall about a 2015 comment that white and black players are treated differently when it comes to NFL discipline. Marshall, perhaps aware of Minihane and Callahan’s history discussing race, said he did not want to go down that road at the moment.

“I’m not getting into the race card with you guys. So if that’s what you guys want to do you can go there, but black guys in America get treated differently, period. I’ll just say that. Black guys in America get treated differently.”

Minihane and Callahan then asked Marshall if athletes specifically were treated differently due to their race, and the receiver got testy.

“We done with this interview? Can I get off of this interview? Alright, I’m done with you guys.

“Come on, man, you’re going back to a year ago, brother. You guys made news now. You got Brandon Marshall to say black guys get treated differently and I’m going to drop the mic on you guys. … Change the subject or I’m getting off, I’m dropping the mic.”

One of the hosts then began a question about Marshall’s past legal and disciplinary troubles, and the receiver announced,  “I’m done with you guys. Bye.”

There’s really not too much to break down here. Minihane and Callahan wanted to talk about one thing, Marshall didn’t want to talk about that thing, and so the interview ended.

Marshall presumably has some nuanced thoughts about how the NFL treats black and white players. It’s hard to fault him for feeling Kirk & Callahan wasn’t the ideal venue to share them.
