Guerin Austin’s future with NESN’s Red Sox broadcasts appears to be up in the air

Guerin Austin started her broadcasting career in Nebraska before finding her way to Washington D.C. where she hosted the Capitals Red Line program from 2010 to 2013. In 2014, she was hired by NESN as a reporter and quickly became a mainstay as part of their Red Sox broadcasts. That may not be the case much longer according to a new report from the Boston Globe.

Per Chad Finn, Austin is scheduled to work the 11-game road trip that opens the Red Sox’s season as expected, followed by a few home games. However, according to his source, she is not scheduled to work any broadcasts for “a couple of months” after that and her role is unclear after that.

Austin is under contract through January and, according to NESN spokesman Gary Roy, the station expects her “to do approximately as many games as she did last year.’’

Austin is perhaps best known to non-Boston audiences for her unfortunate appearances in various Red Sox celebrations.

In May 2017, she was a recipient of a Gatorade bath while interviewing pitcher Brian Johnson after his first win with the club.

Last year, while interviewing Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez following the Red Sox’s ALDS-clinching win over the New York Yankees, Betts accidentally launched a champagne cork right into Austin’s neck.

And then she got doused as part of the World Series celebration as well.

There aren’t many more details beyond that but we’ll likely know if something is up soon enough if Austin isn’t involved in Red Sox broadcasts at the end of April.
