Days after disagreeing over a reporter’s question to New York Giants star Dexter Lawrence, Michael Kay and Don La Greca addressed their disagereement and subsequent shouting match on The Michael Kay Show.
The disagreement came when La Greca aired his grievances with a Giants reporter who asked Lawrence about fans booing the team just two plays into the team’s season-opening game. Specifically, La Greca said that there are “a lot of people who cover football that have no idea what they’re doing.”
Kay pushed back against La Greca’s argument against the reporter, sharing the sentiment that the question was a fair one considering how often the team was booing throughout the 28-6 loss to the Vikings.
Then, the argument turned into La Greca defending himself from Kay, who repeatedly told La Greca that he was wrong. The segment ended with La Greca looking clearly frustrated, slamming his headset on the table and walking away as the show went to commercial.
On Thursday’s edition of The Michael Kay Show, both Kay and La Greca addressed their on-air spat.
“I was upset, I didn’t want it to make the air,” said La Greca about slamming his headset. “I thought I was off-camera when I threw my headset.”
“I didn’t even know you threw your headset,” replied Kay.
“The unfortunate thing about when these videos end up in the hands of people that don’t follow the show,” La Greca said. “It’s taken out of context. ‘Oh, Don’s too sensitive.’ It had nothing to do with my disagreement with Michael. We disagree all the time. But maybe it’s a thing that I need to get over or whatever. But ‘you’re wrong,’ it comes off as very condescending.”
“I’m gonna change,” said Kay. “First of all, I love you. Okay, so because it meant so much to you, I will now assiduously avoid saying you’re wrong when you are giving an opinion. I’ll just say I disagree. Is that okay?”
La Greca then continued on to say that there have been numerous instances as of late where he has felt like Kay has said that one of his opinions was wrong.
“For somebody who is very much into the semantics of things, Captain Literal,” said La Greca of Kay. “There is no such thing as a wrong opinion. It’s an opinion. You may disagree with it. But how can my opinion be wrong?”
“You know what, you’re right,” replied Kay.
“I have felt like there has been a few times lately, added La Greca. “‘No Don, you’re wrong’. I think that’s kind of talking down. ‘No, I completely disagree’. You can be animated about it. It’s not the fact that you thought I was wrong. It kind of just comes across as very dismissive.”
“You’re absolutely right,” said Kay. “I apologize.”
It’s been a heck of a week for Kay, who already had to address his awkward on-air interaction with fellow YES Network broadcaster John Flaherty.
