DirecTV will once again provide MLB games in 4K

Continuing its effort to provide programming in ultra high definition, DirecTV will once again air MLB games in 4K. Last season, it aired selected MLB Network games in the next gen high definition. In 2017, DirecTV and MLB Network will team up to show 25 games.

The catch is that subscribers to DirecTV’s Choice package or higher will have access to the 4K games and they have to a 4K-ready Genie Mini receiver with a 4K TV. So those who are below the Choice tier won’t be able to watch the MLB Network games in UHD.

The 4K package will begin with the Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals game on April 4 and continue throughout the season. Here are the first five games

4/4 – Cubs @ Cardinals
4/12 – Dodgers @ Cubs
4/21 – Nationals @ Mets
4/27 – Yankees @ Red Sox
4/28 – Cubs @ Red Sox

Last year when DirecTV first attempted to air MLB games in 4K, it didn’t go very well, but once it got off the ground, viewers enjoyed the experience.

DirecTV is one provider that has embraced 4K and has aired several sports events in UHD including the Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship, UFC, Olympics, NBA and college basketball.

As more people purchase UHD sets, they’re seeking content in 4K. Networks have been slow to produce content in 4K, however, we’ll see if more sports will be aired as more people transition to UHD.
