It’s no secret that MLS team logos are not as well known as their NFL, MLB and NBA counterparts, but Kansas City’s NBC affiliate still made an entirely avoidable own goal when it displayed the wrong graphic during a newscast.
KSHB 41 displayed a teaser for Saturday’s match between the local Sporting Kansas City team and Inter Miami at Arrowhead Stadium.
There was one small problem: The graphic included a logo that is clearly not the Sporting KC logo.
In fact, it’s the Kansas City Royals’ logo.
An X/Twitter user named Mike, who writes for the KC Soccer Journal, pointed out the issue, wondering what this means for Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi.
“The big question heading into Saturday now is can Messi hit a curve ball #SportingKC,” he posted.

The Sporting KC logo actually looks quite different.

It didn’t take long before the humor started flying on social media about the error.
“Messi playing the Royals in the Chiefs stadium. He really did change the league,” noted one X user.

The graphic also noted that the “Original ‘KC Wizards’ to be honored before kickoff.” Thankfully, the broadcast didn’t flash images of players (Lou Piniella, Buck Martinez, Jim Rooker, etc.) from that 1969 KC Royals expansion team.
