Children can sometimes have a knack for being brutally honest, something anyone watching Saturday’s spring training game between the Houston Astros and New York Mets on Saturday can personally attest to.

New York reliever Danny Young took the mound in the top of the fourth inning. His 0-1 pitch to Houston’s was, in the words of Harry Doyle, played by the iconic Bob Uecker in Major League, “Juuuuuust a bit outside.” It was well out of the reach of Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez and went to the backstop.

As it was only Ball 1 and there were no runners on base, Young’s errant pitch was largely inconsequential. But that wasn’t going to stop one young fan from offering his critique.

“None of those. Those are bad pitches,” the fan said.

The comment was clearly picked up on the broadcast, leading to brief silence and a brief chuckle from the SNY crew.

The kid was just calling it like he saw it — and we really can’t disagree.

For players, spring training is a chance to sharpen up their games to get ready for the beginning of the season. So, there’s often some clear rust, especially in the early days of spring training.

This fan, though, already has his heckling game in midseason form.
