The YES broadcast of Tuesday night’s game between the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees made sure that viewers came away with a complete understanding of why Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh is nicknamed “Big Dumper.”
How Raleigh got that nickname is probably self-explanatory. But in case it’s not, Yankees play-by-play man Michael Kay was there to fill in any gaps.
“They gave him the nickname Big Dumper ’cause he has a pretty large posterior,” Kay explained.
While Kay’s explanation was pretty clear, the broadcast took no chances, providing ample visual aid for anyone who might still be confused. The camera zoomed in on the “pretty large posterior” of Raleigh, who was on first base while the conversation was taking place.
“We’re getting a close-up,” a laughing Paul O’Neill said.
“I don’t know if we need that, guys,” Kay replied. “Goodness.”
“We don’t miss a thing here, Michael,” O’Neill joked.
Since the conversation took place during a mound visit, leading to a temporary break in game action, the broadcast zoomed out and then back in a few times as Kay and O’Neill continued to speak.
At various points this season, John DeMarsico, who directs the New York Mets for SNY, has provided a view into SNY’s truck during big moments of games.
Perhaps his YES counterpart could do the same here.
