The Houston Rockets did not win Friday night, falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves, 113-112. But head coach Ime Udoka pulled a winning move after the game.
In his postgame press conference, Udoka awarded the game ball to Houston Chronicle reporter Jonathan Feigen. The Rockets’ beat reporter retired Friday after covering the team for 27 years, exactly half the time the franchise has played in Houston.
“Game ball to Jonathan,” Udoka said, as he passed the ball to Feigen.
“Thank you,” Feigen said, smiling as reporters applauded.
“27 years, one organization,” Udoka said. “Sorry it’s a sour taste after this one, but a career well done and off into the sunset, enjoy.”
“I really appreciate it. I really do,” Feigen said.
Feigen experienced several distinct eras covering the Rockets, joining the beat near the end of the Hakeem Olajuwon-Charles Barkley era, seeing Yao Ming and James Harden in their prime, and then covering the tough 60-loss seasons in recent years. He announced his retirement via X Friday.
“Well, I guess this is happening. Today is my last day at @HoustonChron,” Feigen wrote. “I’m hanging them up. Way too many people to thank to fit here or in today’s column. So grateful for all these years covering the Rockets, for my mentors, peers and especially readers.”
The Rockets also paid tribute to Feigen on social media.
Now, Feigen has a game ball to display at home.
