While Netflix continues to simply dip its toe in the pool of live sports content, they continue to pump out sports-adjacent shows at an unfathomable rate.
The latest of which is a six-part docuseries chronicling the 2024 Olympic men’s basketball competition called Court of Gold. Based on the documentary’s trailer, Court of Gold will follow several of the top teams at last year’s Paris Olympics including the United States, France, Serbia, and Canada.
Set to be released on February 18th, Court of Gold clearly had tremendous access to the top players in the 2024 Olympic basketball competition. Featured prominently in the trailer are Kevin Durant and Victor Wembanyama. There are also non-player cameos from Carmelo Anthony, USA head coach Steve Kerr, and even former president Barack Obama.
The most quotable part of the trailer features Durant responding to the premise that Team USA wouldn’t have the same level of chemistry as other teams since the players don’t play together as often. “That chemistry gonna help you when gotta guard Steph [Curry]?” Durant says. That sentiment would prove to be prescient if you watched the gold medal game between the United States and France.
This type of docuseries continues to be Netflix’s bread and butter when it comes to the streamer’s involvement in sports. While they recently aired a pair of NFL Christmas Day games and began airing WWE’s weekly Raw series in January, Netflix has made clear that full-season live sports packages aren’t in the picture, at least for now.
But the streamer’s non-live sports content continues to be among the best in the space. And Court of Gold will seek to continue that reputation.
