Have the Los Angeles Chargers finally found a home-field advantage? Maybe. But there’s a catch.
Whether at their temporary home of Dignity Health Sports Park or their current, permanent home at SoFi Stadium, the Chargers have had virtually no home-field advantage since moving to Los Angeles from their longtime San Diego home after the 2016 season. Chargers fans have consistently been vastly outnumbered during Los Angeles home games. This has been especially true when they’ve played another West Coast team or an opponent with a big national fanbase.
So, during Monday night’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, it was notable when play-by-play man Chris Fowler spoke of the high number of Chargers fans in the crowd. More notable was that Monday’s game was played at Glendale, Arizona’s State Farm Stadium — home of the Cardinals.
“This doesn’t feel like a Cardinals home game,” Fowler said after the Cardinals stopped the Chargers on a third down in the second quarter, forcing a punt. “There are so many folks in blue here. But those who are supporting the home team are fired up at the moment.”
Congratulations to the Chargers. Now in their eighth season in Los Angeles, they finally figured out how to get home-field advantage — playing a road game in Arizona.
