It was announced on Friday that Brian Schottenheimer will be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Actually, it was announced on Friday night that Schottenheimer would be the next head coach of the Cowboys. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news on X (formerly Twitter) at 9:41 ET and the Cowboys shared the news on their own account four minutes later.
One thing that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has craved over the years is attention. Announcing a new head coach is certainly something that will grab headlines, regardless of when that happens. That said, if you’re looking to attract the least attention possible, announcing a move late on a Friday night is usually a good way to do it.
And it’s safe to say that plenty of observers felt that the Cowboys — and Jones, specifically — intentionally announced this hire as part of a Friday night news dump.

Embarrassing Friday night news dump from a pathetic franchise. Jerry Jones promoted an OC who didn’t call plays on a 7-10 team. Team that was so bad he didn’t bring back the HC
Schottenheimer wasn’t a candidate for any of the other head coaching jobs
“How bout them Cowboys” 😂 https://t.co/BKkh29l9Tg

Has there ever been a darker time in #Cowboys history?
The Campo years were at least following a dynastic decade.
For an owner who loves stealing headlines to make this announcement in a classic Friday night news dump suggests he is embarrassed and Mike McCarthy walked out. https://t.co/W0s364wIpB

Announcing any kind of news on a Friday evening is the ultimate sign of not being excited about it. It’s called the Friday News Dump, and Jerry is well aware of this long-standing practice. https://t.co/Bc9yYDkRC9

Announcing the cowboys coach Friday night is the most anti Jerry move of my life. Even he knows everyone except Brian’s wife & real estate agent are going to hate the news

Schotty is freaking coaching the Cowboys.
And it’s not even an Onion headline.
He ruined Christmas as Jets OC. Wait until you see Thanksgiving.
Jerry announces Coach as late Fri news dump. He knew the reaction. Avoids the talk shows. Normally would own the A block. Telling…

Friday night news dump? C’mon, Jerry! You’re slipping! https://t.co/8OdJzBXS58

The great showman Jerry Jones is so excited about this hire that he’s dropped it at…10 p.m. eastern on Friday night.

The attention-obsessed Cowboys buried the hiring of their new coach at 10 ET on a Friday night. That tells you all you need to know.
