Though Tom Brady has dangled the possibility of a comeback a few times, Dan Orlovsky isn’t convinced.
With Brady a season removed from retirement and having a broadcasting gig awaiting at Fox, Orlovsky isn’t betting the family farm on the future Hall of Famer returning to the field, even if Brady continues to hint at it.
Recently, Brady said he wasn’t opposed to the idea of making a comeback. Take that how you will, but he’s also trying to navigate becoming a part owner of the Las Vegas Raiders on top of being Kevin Burkhardt’s partner in the booth. And during a discussion on ESPN’s Get Up about whether the Raiders made a mistake in not drafting a quarterback, Brady’s name was, of course, brought up.
“I don’t know if they grow back, but if Brady plays for the Raiders this year, I’ll shave my eyebrows,” said the former NFL journeyman. “As long as they grow back.”
With their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Las Vegas swung for the fences by picking Brock Bowers. They also addressed the trenches and their secondary. By the time the Raiders’ picked at No. 13, six quarterbacks were already off the board. That made taking one early null and void, but Las Vegas could’ve used a Day 3 pick on a passer like Spencer Rattler, Jordan Travis or Michael Pratt.
Instead, they opted to see what they have in Aidan O’Connell, the second-year quarterback out of Purdue, and the 27-year-old Gardner Minshew, who signed a two-year, $25 million pact in the offseason. The Raiders currently have Minshew, O’Connell, Anthony Brown Jr. and Carter Bradley, an undrafted free agent out of South Alabama, filling out their quarterback depth chart.
The Raiders wouldn’t mind Brady returning to lead their quarterbacks, but with Orlovsky’s eyebrows on the line, it’s doubtful it’ll happen. But as ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum quipped, perhaps we should all be rooting for Brady’s return in that instance.
