Millions of Americans celebrated Halloween with their family and friends on Thursday night. But not Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon, who let it be known that he hasn’t celebrated the holiday in quite some time.
We’re just under two months away from Christmas. But during his media availability on Friday, Gannon played the role of Ebenezer Scrooge when it came to questions about how he celebrated Halloween.
When asked by reporters if he enjoyed Halloween on Thursday, Gannon emphatically said that he did not and has not celebrated the holiday “since he was in the third grade”.
“Did you get to enjoy your Halloween night?” Gannon was asked by a reporter.
“No, I haven’t enjoyed a Halloween since I was in the third grade. Long time… I mean, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, you don’t get those holidays, you know what I mean? And I joke about it but our families make a lot of sacrifice, so I appreciate that.”
When asked a follow-up question by reporters on Friday about his favorite Halloween candy, Gannon responded that he doesn’t “like to spike his insulin” with loads of candy. But he has a feeling that Johnny Venerable, a co-host of the PHNX Arizona Cardinals Podcast, does quite enjoy his fair share of candy.
“No, I don’t love to spike my insulin in 13 seconds,” said Gannon in a video shared by Bo Brack on X, a Cardinals reporter and Venerable’s co-host on the PHNX Arizona Cardinals Podcast. “Johnny V. probably does, he’s probably crushing candy right now. Not winning behavior man.”
If you are worried about your insulin levels on a day like Halloween, it’s probably pretty safe to assume that you take your personal health pretty seriously.
Maybe this kind of discipline from Gannon is what has helped turn around this Cardinals team this season in the NFC. Because clearly, it is all work and no play in the Gannon household during the football season, as even holidays aren’t an exception for him.
