Earlier this month, Detroit Lions star Jared Goff criticized Detroit media outlets, saying that he believes that a majority of outlets “almost relish in negativity”. But in a recent conversation with ESPN’s Eric Woodyard, he backtracked on this stance for the most part.
Truth be told, there hasn’t been all that much negative to speak of around the Lions since Goff became the starting quarterback. The team has shown drastic improvement each season, capped off by the team’s 12-5 record this past season.
But still, Goff has had to answer some tough questions, particularly once the Lions came up against the San Francisco 49ers in the postseason.
The question that originally prompted his criticism of Detroit media outlets came when one reporter illuded to the 49ers having “more superstar talent” than the Lions did.
While discussing his past criticisms with Woodyard, Goff claimed that he was talking about that question in particular and that his comments were taken out of context.
“There’s been a ton of positivity. It may have got twisted a little bit, as things do. I was speaking in reference to the question I was asked at that press conference,” Goff told Woodyard. “I was answering that question. I was not saying there aren’t any positive news, I wouldn’t really know, but they have been positive to me. I was saying that I think sometimes, some of the people, enjoy the negative news and I don’t think that’s necessarily specific to Detroit.”
Goff then added that his comments weren’t specific to Detroit and that he has experienced negativity on his past team as well as a member of the Los Angeles Rams.
“I was speaking about our local guys, but I think that’s kind of the world,” he said. “Not to get really grand right now, but it wasn’t necessarily specific to Detroit, it was the world media, sports media, certainly the NFL media and the roller coaster that is and what sells clicks. But, yeah, maybe I should’ve been a little more specific with that.”
It sure sounds like Goff actually enjoys being in Detroit, as he later said in his conversation with Woodyard. But as expectations rise for the Lions, Goff may have to face tougher and tougher questions moving forward.
