Geno Smith slams NFL insider’s ‘made up’ report on Seahawks

Is Geno Smith in a precarious spot as starting quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks? That depends on who you ask.

NFL Insider John Frascella reported on Thursday “Geno Smith is ‘on shakier ground than people realize,’ according to west coast source.

“The Seahawks front office believes they ‘got a steal’ in the Sam Howell trade, and they are astonished at how productive he was despite a dysfunctional situation in Washington,” the report added. “My source compared the Seattle situation to the Pittsburgh Steelers: ‘If Russ falters, you know Fields is gonna be in there,’ he said.”

A lot has changed in Seattle since the end of the 2023 season. Howell has been acquired. Beyond that, longtime coach Pete Carroll was reassigned and replaced with Mike Macdonald. Macdonald, as well as offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and quarterbacks coach Charles London, are new to the organization. Certainly, changes like that often come with changes to the personnel on the field.

Despite that, Smith disputed Frascella’s reporting.

“U just made this BS up,” he said in a quote tweet. “Media is full of liars it’s so crazy!”

Smith has enjoyed a career renaissance over the last two years, replacing longtime quarterback Russell Wilson. During the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Smith completed a combined 67.4% of his passes for 7,906 yards with 50 touchdowns, 20 interceptions and a 96.8 passer rating. Additionally, Seattle has posted a 17-15 record in Smith’s starts (he missed two games in 2023). Smith also made the Pro Bowl in both 2022 and 2023.

So, it would make sense that he’d have some job security.
