Boston sports fans may not have been too happy about it, but Chipotle fans were given a surprising treat during the Bruins broadcast on NESN.
About midway through the second period Tuesday night, the broadcast was a little late returning from a commercial break. But thankfully, not late enough to cause viewers to miss any of the action. Six seconds later, however, with Bruins center Morgan Geekie lining up for the shot off a rebound, NESN shocked its audience by going to a Chipotle commercial just as the puck neared the net.
Play-by-play voice Judd Sirot didn’t even have time to say who the shot came from. But as fans watching at home moved to the edge of their seats to see if Geekie could bury a rebound off Elias Lindholm’s shot, they were suddenly staring at a big pot of braised beef barbacoa.
No, you didn’t accidentally sit on your remote, and no one rudely changed the channel. This was just a brief blunder by NESN. Less than 10 seconds later, the game was back in time for Bruins fans to hear Sirot say, “Rifles in his 19th! A power play goal! Bruins 3, Maple Leafs nothing.”
Yes, Bruins fans missed seeing the puck actually go in the net, but was anyone really that upset? The Bruins are having a disappointing season and at least this is Chipotle’s braised beef barbacoa we’re talking about, it’s not like NESN made its audience trade a goal for the Filet-O-Fish.
