Former NFL punter Sean Landeta did not appreciate Philly radio question about grooming habits

There are a lot of accomplishments and stories from his NFL career that former punter Sean Landeta would love to talk to you about.

Several Philadelphia sports radio hosts found out Wednesday that there’s at least one topic he would prefer not to.

Landeta, the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team punter who played for the Philadelphia Eagles between 1999 and 2002 as well as in 2005, appeared on the Ike, Spike, and Fritz show on 94 WIP in Philly. During the interview, he was asked about former Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchell’s claim that the 63-year-old punter would groom his “under regions in the sauna” in front of other players.

“Freddie Mitchell was on the morning show today, and he mentioned that you and Jon Ritchie were often in the sauna together, but Mitchell mentioned — how do I put this — that you would groom, uh, your under regions in the sauna,” host Spike Eskin said to Landeta.

“You want to call me during prime-time radio in Philadelphia and talk to me about something like that,” Landeta said. “Are you kidding me? I know this is TMZ Radio and I like Freddie, you know good teammate and all. but what he said was absolutely false. I totally deny being in the sauna with Jon Ritchie. That never happened.

“Now, may there have been a time where I was by myself and maybe had to shave a little bit? Ok, maybe that’s something that goes on privately in a locker room, and there is a saying that in the NFL that’s supposed to go, ‘What you see here or what you say here stays here and never leaves here.’

“Obviously, Mr. Freddie must’ve wanted to get some people to go ‘Oh, wow’ … but I’m disappointed in Mr. Mitchell. I’m going to have to speak to him about that.”

Landeta then turned his attention to the radio hosts, chastising them for putting him on the spot for the sake of ratings.

“One guy embarrassing another guy,” Landeta said.

“They were just having some fun,” said one of the hosts.

“I understand what I’m dealing with. I would think with the Eagles having a playoff game coming up they wouldn’t be talking about guys in saunas,” Landeta responded.

We’re guessing Landeta, who spent 22 seasons in the NFL for five different teams and won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants, won’t be appearing on the show again anytime soon.
