Former USMNT and MLS goalkeeper turned broadcaster Tony Meola suffered a heart attack Thursday but is expected to make a full recovery, according to several reports.
MLS/USMNT insider Tom Bogert reported Friday that Meola is in “good spirits” and doctors have said he’ll be OK. But Meola, who turned 56 Friday, shared a message: “Go get frequent check ups.”
Meola made 100 appearances as goalkeeper for the USMNT, including in the 1990, 1994 and 2002 World Cups, and later played 250 MLS matches, primarily with Sporting Kansas City and New York Red Bulls.
Since retiring in 2007, he’s filled a number of media roles. He’s best known now for his work on SiriusXM FC’s Counter Attack show and with CBS Sports Golazo Network.
