Arizona Diamondbacks’ colour commentator Bob Brenly apparently has strong feelings about former Montreal Expos’ mascot Youppi!. In the middle of the Diamondbacks-Rockies game Wednesday, Brenly went on a rant about how he disliked Youppi! during his playing, coaching and managing career:
Here’s the transcription: “Youppi had a little bit of that French attitude, you know? He grew up in Montreal…I got along with all the mascots, I had a lot of fun with the San Diego Chicken, the Phillie Phanatic, the Pirate Parrot, I got along with all them, but Youppi just rubbed me the wrong way. I just wanted to jerk him off the top of the dugout.”
That’s quite the strong sentiment from Brenly, but it has a few inaccuracies. A “French attitude” from someone who grew up in Montreal? Surely he means a French-Canadian attitude. And those last couple of lines qualify him for some #sensualbaseball. Fortunately, Brenly doesn’t have to see Youppi! anymore; after the Expos moved to Washington, Youppi! stuck around in Montreal, but he’s now the official mascot of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens. Unless Brenly gets shifted to working Arizona Coyotes games, he’s probably not going to run into Youppi! too frequently.
