When Gus Johnson was in his final days as a Fox soccer announcer, he was by far the most popular person in the broadcast booth, in spite of the criticism thrown his way. Johnson’s partner his last year, Eric Wynalda, drew just as much angst from viewers (if not more) than Gus did. Now that he’s back in the studio, it’s not going much better.
Here he is from this week’s Champions League coverage with expert “analysis” on an Andrea Pirlo free kick, saying he imagines that’s what Christopher Columbus would look like. Because Columbus was from Italy… and he was a free kick maestro… or something…

Fox is less than a year away from their first World Cup telecast. But forget that. If your lead analyst can’t even bother to know where the teams hail from in the Champions League, the premier club competition in the world, something needs fixing now.
