The Boston Celtics had a banner night at TD Garden on Tuesday, and that goes beyond the team’s record-tying 132-109 win over the New York Knicks.
It was literally “Banner Night,” as the team celebrated the record 18th NBA championship it won earlier this year. Before the game, players received their championship rings while fans were treated to videos showing highlights from last season and past Celtics championship teams. Celtics legends such as Bob Cousy, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce were on hand.
TNT, which broadcast the game, was there for all of it, including that touching moment when NBA Championship banner No. 18 began rising to the arena’s rafters. Ceremonial music played as players watched the banner rise… and then, at that very moment, fans at home watched as TNT cut to a commercial break.

According to many reliable reports, the banner did reach its destination. But the timing of TNT’s commercial break was rather unfortunate, to say the least. Obviously, networks have a schedule to ensure they run all their commercial breaks, but it seems TNT could have waited another 30 seconds here before the break.
The Celtics would go on to hit an NBA record-tying 29 three-pointers while winning the first game of their championship defense.
