Sportsnet’s X account recovered ahead of Stanley Cup Finals Game 1

Roughly two-and-a-half hours after announcing that the account had been hacked, Sportsnet’s X (formerly Twitter) account was recovered.

At 3:24 p.m. ET, the Sportsnet PR (@SportsnetPR) announced on X that Sportsnet’s main account (@Sportsnet) had been hacked, telling followers to not click on any links coming from it.

At 5:53 p.m. ET, Sportsnet PR announced on X, “Our main @sportsnet account has been recovered.”

While there’s never a good time for an X account to get hacked, a Canadian sports network getting its account hacked on the same day as Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final is a particularly bad time — especially when the Stanley Cup Final features a Canadian team.

Fortunately for those at Sportsnet, the account was revived more than two hours before the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers got underway in Game 1.

The Panthers are in the Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row and the third time in franchise history. They are still looking for their first championship. Edmonton is in its eighth final and first since 2006. An Oilers win would be the first Stanley Cup championship since 1990 and Canada’s first since 1993.
